How To Remove Soot from Out Of The Carpet

You work diligently to keep your house smelling fresh and clean. It’s a challenging task for the average Westchester County, Hudson River Valley, and Western New York household of 2.6 persons and 1.46 dogs. You mop the floors, clean the counters, and vacuum the carpeting. But you can’t understand why these dark black spots keep appearing on your beautiful carpet and expensive rugs. Well, the culprit isn’t Fido this time. Instead, it is most likely your warm and cozy fireplace, and those black spots on the carpet are soot.

Like creosote and carbon monoxide, soot is a natural by-product of combustion. Although primarily carbon, it is prevalent in coal, wood, and gas heating appliances. For example, when you light the fireplace, you can watch the chemical reaction that creates fire. The carbon-produced by-products are minuscule particles that float through the air into your living space. While nearly invisible to the naked eye, they leave dark black spots where they land, such as on the carpeting, flooring, and nearby furnishings.

Cleaning Soot from The Carpet

Cleaning soot from your carpet can be a daunting task. When black soot from your fire lands on your carpeting, it can create unsightly stains that are incredibly difficult to remove. However, if addressed promptly and correctly, it’s easier to remove.

Here are the six steps for getting soot out of your carpet:

Step #1: First, test any cleaning products you plan to use on a hidden carpet area in case of discoloration or further damage. You can use enzyme cleaners, laundry detergents, or dishwashing soap.

Step #2: Vacuum the area to remove any loose soot particles. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to prevent spreading any fine soot particles that may remain in the carpet.

Step #3: Mix a few tablespoons of your cleaning solution with a cup of warm water. Some cleaning solutions, like Dawn, also contain a degreasing agent, which is highly effective in removing soot. Dip a cloth into the solution and dab at the affected areas. Do not rub or scrub the soot, as this will push the stain deeper into the carpet fibers.

Step #4: Now, it’s time to spot-treat the area. Dip a soft brush into the cleaning solution and gently scrub the soot. A toothbrush will do too. This should help release particles stuck in the carpet fibers.
