Spring is Right Around the Corner: Chimney Checklist
After spending the last two months digging ourselves out of a mountain of snow that fell in the Hudson Valley region, folks here are more than ready for a warm and colorful spring season. Now that spring is right around the corner, it’s time to review your chimney checklist to avoid any unpleasant surprises and costly repairs.
Winter Impact on Your Masonry

The recent blizzard that blanketed our communities with a wintry mix of heavy snow, ice, and slush can be devastating to masonry chimneys, especially if they have sustained damage from prior storms. As the highest point of your home, the stack absorbs most of the impact. When snow piles up and compacts, the sheer weight can lead to spalling and loose mortar joints. In extreme cases, this structural damage can lead to a total collapse. We recently saw this happen to a downstate high-rise, where a chimney failure took out an entire wall. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but several residents were displaced.
Spring Chimney Checklist for Hudson Valley Residents
Since both gas and wood-burning appliances are popular sources of winter heat, we’ve created a handy checklist for both types. Remember, this checklist isn’t a replacement for your annual chimney inspection, which we recommend in spring.
For wood-burning fireplaces/stoves:
- Inspect External Masonry: Walk around your home and look for cracked bricks, gaps in the mortar, or white powdery staining (efflorescence), which indicates water absorption.
- Check the Cap and Crown: Ensure the chimney cap is still secure with its mesh screen intact. Ensure the concrete crown at the top isn’t cracking. These are the first lines of defense against spring rain and curious critters.
- Clean the Firebox: Once the burning season is over, sweep out the debris and scrub the walls with a stiff brush to remove soot buildup. You can use fireplace cleaner or make your own environmentally friendly solution of equal parts water and vinegar. Don’t forget to clean those glass doors too!
- Recycle the Ashes: Don’t discard. Wood ash is rich in potassium and other minerals, making it a fantastic natural fertilizer for your spring garden or for neutralizing acidic soil. There are other uses too, such as polishing your silverware or using it as compost.
For gas-burning fireplaces and log sets:
- Check the Glass Assembly: Clean any buildup off the glass using a specialized gas fireplace cleaner (avoid ammonia-based products). A natural solution of water and vinegar works well.
- Inspect the Pilot and Burner: Ensure the pilot light is working, and the burner ports aren’t clogged with dust or soot.
- Replace Remote Batteries: Spring is the perfect time to swap out batteries in your remote and receiver to prevent corrosion over the summer.
- Clear Exterior Vents: Check your exterior wall vents to ensure birds and pests haven’t started building nests, and that debris isn’t blocking airflow.
Schedule Your Professional Inspection
Whether you burn wood or gas, an annual professional inspection is the only way to truly guarantee your home is safe from fire, carbon monoxide, and structural hazards. A certified sweep can identify any internal “hidden” damage left behind from the winter storm.
